Résumé en français (traduction) : Agriculture intelligente et intelligence artificielle (IA) : Comment faire en sorte que le bien-être des animaux soit une priorité ?
L’utilisation croissante de la technologie dans l’élevage a le potentiel de rendre l’élevage plus facile et plus efficace et d’améliorer le bien-être des animaux. Toutefois, il existe également des dangers potentiels, dont l’un est que le bien-être des animaux soit subordonné à la recherche d’une plus grande efficacité. Je soutiendrai que pour que la technologie tienne sa promesse d’améliorer la vie des animaux, trois conditions doivent être remplies : (i) le public et l’industrie agricole doivent être convaincus que les mesures automatisées du bien-être peuvent rendre compte de ce que l’on entend par « bon bien-être » (ii) il existe des preuves scientifiques que la technologie améliore réellement le bien-être des animaux lorsqu’elle est déployée dans des exploitations commerciales (iii) il existe des avantages financiers, environnementaux et autres démontrables, ainsi que des avantages en termes de bien-être, de sorte que l’industrie est convaincue qu’il est commercialement intéressant d’accorder la priorité au bien-être.

Résumé en anglais (original) : The increasing use of technology in livestock farming has the potential for making farming easier and more efficient and for improving animal welfare. There are also, however, potential dangers, one of which is that animal welfare becomes subordinated to the drive for greater efficiency. I will argue that for technology to deliver on its promise of being able to improve the lives of animals, three conditions need to be met: (i) Both the public and the agricultural industry must be satisfied that automated measures of welfare can capture what is meant by ‘good welfare’ (ii) There is scientific evidence that the technology genuinely improves animal welfare when deployed on commercial farms (iii) There are demonstrable financial, environmental and other benefits as well as welfare ones so that industry is convinced that prioritizing welfare is commercially worthwhile.
